Inland navigation and inland waterway law is a unique world. This means that specific jargon is often used. This lexicon will help you master some much-needed terms.

  • Lakes

    Een water in het binnenland, gewoonlijkvan zoetwater, en volledig door land omgeven, of in de buurt van de zee, echter zonder directe verbinding hiertoe;

    lake: a standing body of inland water of various size usually with fresh water and without a connection to the sea, except for rivers or artificial canals;
    inland sea: a very large continental water composed of salt water. Not to be confused with closed sea, that part of the ocean enclosed by headlands, within narrow straits, etc., or within the territorial jurisdiction of a country;
    loch: a lake or an almost landlocked inlet of the sea;
