an inland vessel, designed for the dimensions of the Rhine-Rhone canal (length 38,5m, beam 5,05m); the term "Spitz" has become a collective name for small short and narrow ships navigating the canals in (Northern) France and Belgium. They are not well suited for travelling on free flowing rivers such as the Scheldt and the Rhine where they, nevertheless, can be seen every now and then.
